College Research 101 Course

Module 6: Citing Your Sources

This module is all about citations.

You have found, read, and taken notes on the right number and type of resources to satisfy the assignment and address your research question or thesis statement. Your sources include things you located in library databases or online and after evaluating them, you found them to be credible.  You are ready to write, right? All you need is to toss a few properly cited quotes from your sources into your project, and you’re done.

Right?

Not quite… In Module 2 you learned how to analyze and synthesize resources to find the best information to support your writing. You are now ready to use those skills to integrate your sources, using properly cited and referenced quotations, paraphrases, and summaries, into a project that communicates in your own voice. Module 2 also introduced the concept of using information ethically, avoiding plagiarism, and why we need to cite those sources found in the library databases or online.

There are many ways to cite sources, but this module will only explore two, MLA & APA citation styles

By the end of this tutorial, you’ll be able to understand:

  • Plagiarism and citation, including MLA and APA styles
  • How and when to quote, paraphrase, and summarize
  • Using signal phrases to integrate researched information into your project
