Elizabethtown Vocational School opened its doors to 164 students in August of 1966. Frank Conkell served as the school's first director. EVS offered two-year courses in auto mechanics, technical drafting, building trades, appliance repair and industrial electricity, and a one year course in welding. The school was built with a federal grant (Manpower Development and Training Act of 1962) and matching funds from a local bond issue. The North Central Kentucky Education Foundation donated the land adjacent to Elizabethtown Community College. The land and building were held by Elizabethtown City Schools; the curriculum fell under the jurisdiction of the Jefferson Area Vocational School which answered directly to the workforce cabinet in Frankfort.
In 1972 the school received a one million dollar grant from the federal government for expansion. NCKEF donated another ten acres. The expansion was necessary in order for the school to add six additional programs, enabling it to become an area vocational center in its own right, and allowing it to report directly to Frankfort. The new Elizabethtown State Vocational Technical School received its accreditation in December 1973.
In 1990 the newly formed Kentucky Tech system took control of the Vocational Technical Schools. ESVTS became Kentucky Tech Elizabethtown. It retained this name until January 1, 1998, when it became Elizabethtown Technical College under the administration of the new Kentucky Community and Technical College System, created in 1997.
On January 1, 2004 Elizabethtown Community College and Elizabethtown Technical College officially merged, becoming Elizabethtown Community and Technical College.
