Education K-12: Print Books

Overview

Why Are Books Useful?

Books generally provide detailed, in-depth discussions on broad topics. They will include background information on their topics. They are unlikely to contain very current information (that is, they will not include information about something that happened last week) but they are useful for the amount of coverage and detailed discussion on general topics.

Searching the Book Catalog

Every print book on our shelves has a corresponding book record in the catalog. Each record contains the title and subject headings. Subject headings are broad terms assigned to books. They tell you broadly what the book is about. Most book records also contain the table of contents and a brief overview of the book contents. These fields increase the number of relevant terms that can be picked up in a search.

When you enter search terms and hit SEARCH the catalog software cannot search within a physical book. It only searches on the contents of a book record.

Use broad keywords. Type in a simple word or phrase, like Bullying or Classroom Management.

You can combine terms using the term AND. Examples include Reading AND Education; Behavior AND Classroom. Records would have to include both terms, someplace in the record.

You can also use OR. Try adding TEACHER OR TEACHING to a search. Book records would have to include one or the other. They can also include both.

If you don't want your search to show older books there is a trick. Follow the screen capture. You can also do a regular search and simply change Sort By Relevance to Sort by Newest

Click on Advanced Search

You will pull up the Advanced Search fields. Type in your search terms in the top search field. Leave it at ANY FIELD. Look at the lower right section of the Advanced Search interface. You will see the area where you can set Start Dates and End Dates. Use the drop down arrows to set your start and end dates. Make the end date the day of your search.
