2 Boxes  (restricted)

Covers the years 1966 to 2006, with some gaps.

Contents for folders 1967 to 1979 include programs, working lists of possible candidates, memos to students and faculty, cap, gown and invitation orders, correspondence with potential guest speakers and platform guests, news releases, invitations, ceremony planning documents, speaker’s cards. Physical materials include: legal and letter-sized paper; quarter and three-quarter sized paper; irregular sized paper, mimeographs, typed documents, handwritten documents, copies on onion skin, lined notepaper, cardstock, index cards, scraps torn from regular-sized paper, 14.5 w continuous form printer paper with sproket engagement holes. Correspondence labelled as “copy” are most likely typed on onionskin.

Contents for folders 1980 to 2006 are limited to programs and a few memos.

RESTRICTIONS: Some of the documents contain sensitive/private data. This box must therefore be off limits to the public. Individual items that do not contain sensitive data may be scanned and shared with researchers. Documents such as programs and most correspondence will be scanned.

Box 1. Folder - 1966

The first annual graduation exercises took place on May 9, 1966 at 8:00pm. Reverend Bob DeFoor, of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, delivered the invocation. Dr. Stanley Wall, Associate Dean of UK's College of Agriculture and Home Economics, gave the graduation address. Reverend Walter C. Sutton, First Presbyterian Church, gave the benediction. Mrs. Kenneth L. Noidig provided the music for the recessional and processional.

1 program. This copy was used as a mockup for the following year's program, so dates and names have been crossed out; names and dates for 1967 have been written in ink on the program. The words University of Kentucky appear above the college name, as they would until the graduation of 1998. The Commonwealth seal also appears on the cover, as it would until 1999, when the KCTCS seal would make its first appearance. The graduation would maintain this size, shape and format until 1999.

Notes for ceremony MC  – author likely Dr. Owen as the notes are clearly intended for the individual serving as the ceremony MC. Dr. Owen is the only VIP not mentioned in the notes; if another individual read the cards he would surely introduce Dr. Owen.

The cards include the following notes: The invocation will be given by Reverend Bob DeFoor, pastor at Mount Moriah Baptist Church. Platform guests include Dean Ellis Hartford, Robert C. Wade, Lee Stearman, C.B. Morgan, Ray Jenkins, Bernie Sears, Robert Keen, Reverend Walter Sutton and Reverend Bob DeFoor. The cards also contain thanks to various individuals and groups – staff and faculty mentioned by name; two sororities who helped with ushering and the reception.

Memo. 3 pages. To: Dr. Owen. From: Don Wallace, Martha Bain and Ernest Hill (commencement committee.) Date: March 30, 1966. This document covers degree requirements, the order in which degrees should be conferred; guidelines for faculty; guidelines for students; guidelines for speaker bookings; physical arrangements; ceremony order. Mimeograph.
